Also known as SEO, Search engine Optimization is a growing profession in the world and it mostly involves operation on the world wide web. Search engine Optimization has to do with improving a website's ranking on search engines or at least optimizing a site to be search engine friendly.
If you've got a website and you are offering products or services for a fee, chances are that you may have been lacking over the years due to low traffic and probably because your site is "invisible". SEO can help bring visibility to your web site if you know how to do it or have someone who can help you to.
Normally most companies who have a web presence employ SEO websites for a few months to help work on optimizing their websites. Others employ Web developers, who are equally skilled in SEO, to manage their websites for the long run.
If you've got good SEO skills or are looking for one, then you can go to freelance website like Guru.com and benefit from it.
In a growing world with a growing competition in the web industry, having a website or blog or web presence is just not enough, you also need to make your presence felt.
Being a good SEO requires that you have a good understanding of how these major search engines work;
- Google
- Yahoo
- Bing
There are also other search engines like dogpile.com and ask.com.
Search engine optimizers are of two kinds:
White Hat SEO
Black hat SEO
The white Hat SEO improves your website rankings on search engines using ethical techniques which are not forbidden by search engines such as improving page content, adding relevant keywords, page re-design, link generation e.t.c.
It doesn't guarantee the quickest results but it guarantees a long term benefits
Black Hat techniques for SEO involves manipulating the search engines such that they rank the website higher within a short time. Search engines do not like this as it takes away credibility from their search results. It involves creating doorway pages, link exchange programmes, automatic content generators, content copying, keyword stuffing and so on. You may outsmart search engines like Google and Yahoo for a couple of weeks but after that the site becomes banned and it may take a longer time to get listed back on search results again.
It guarantees short term results however.
How to improve your site's ranking on search engines:
- Improve your page content by adding a blog or forum
- Get a twitter or Facebook account related to your site
- Get reviews or paid reviews on popular blogs
- Use Google adwords or other search engine advertising to show your site on first page
