It's one thing to buy new coloured clothes and another thing to maintain their colour for the long term. There are certain things that cause your clothes to lose colour or fade out and there are things you can also do to slow it down.
Would you rather want your clothes never to lose colour at all? Well, it's possible but that basically means never wearing, washing or drying them and keeping them stored in a cool safe place. All clothes do eventually lose some colour at one point or the other but there are things you can do to slow it down.
Things that cause clothes to lose colour or fade out and what to do
====================
- Sunglight: The more sunlight beams on your clothes as you dry them, the more colour they lose. It's been proven. So, even if you are drying your clothes under the sun, don't let them out for too long and also hand your clothes inside out.
- Washing inside out: Not washing your clothes inside out eventually makes the outside fade colours much faster. When washing your clothes, you can preserve their colours much longer by first turning them inside out before soaking in water.
- Powerful detergents: Yes, some detergents used in washing can be too powerful that they make your clothes to lose colour. Try to use only milder detergents or washing soaps for your coloured clothes rather than powerful harsh ones sine they tend to bleach clothes faster. Even ordinary water without detergent can be used at times if your clothes are not that dirty and you just want to remove the smell or little dirt. Detergents are mostly added to water to aid washing for more effective stain removal. The less detergents you use, the less colour they are likely to lose and milder detergents or washing soaps are better.
- Heat: Don't apply too much heat to your coloured clothes because it causes them to fade. During Ironing, washing or drying, clothes that absorb too much heat tend to lose their colours faster. Coloured clothes do well in cold than in heat.
- Regular washing: When you wash your clothes frequently, they tend to lose colour faster. If you wash them sparingly, then they would retain their colours much longer. Frequent washing of clothes make them fade faster.
- Having Few clothes: If you have few clothes, you will be likely to wear them most of the time and the more you wear them, the more they tend to lose colour. So, someone who has only 5 shirts is more likely to have them faded much faster than a person who has up to 20.
In summary, what I'm saying is that you can make your coloured clothes last longer without fading by doing the following things:
- Avoiding too much sunlight during drying
- Avoid using to much heat when washing, ironing and drying
- Avoiding frequent washing
- Using milder detergents or washing soap
- Having more clothes to avoid regular washing
- Doing your washing with cold water
- Washing and drying them inside out
