For those who don't already know about them, Yudala is an online and offline retailer in Nigeria with a big difference and they've shown their innovation by being the first to deliver goods to a customer using a drone in Nigeria. I guess this wold be the first drone delivery ever in Nigeria and this was done by a shopping company.
I was watching Nigerian news lately on Black Friday and was fascinated when I saw a drone flying over some danfos and Okadas and it was soon in the air for a few minutes after which it arrived at a different location and landed. A Yudala staff took a package from it and delivered it to a Yudala customer who had ordered for the product online. I have to say Kudos to Yudala for this great feat they've achieved.
Imagine the fact that they were able to avoid traffic by flying the goods in the air until it reached the delivery point of the customer. If this is the way which online shopping companies and retailers in Nigeria would start delivering items to Nigerians, then it's going to help buyers get their goods faster and would more likely be willing to keep buying from them.
I've been shopping online for a while and I know how it feels waiting almost endlessly for your order even after the courier may have called me informing me that he was on the way. One may be made to wait at a location for hours just to receive his package but with drone delivery, traffic is probably out of the question but I wonder how this would really work in Nigeria.
If it was possible for people in Nigeria to order for products using the internet from a seller and the seller is able to deliver in minutes to the buyer using drones that fly in the air, then there would be no go slows and no delays because it's an air delivery service.
Yudala achieved this feat in what I'd say is a test but I wonder if this would be feasible in the long term. Would there require a government licence to use drones to deliver goods across Nigeria? Would the drones be able to deliver to the client without the need for a their company staff being present? Would Nigerians try to attack the drones since they'll feel suspicious? Would such drones take pictures of people who receive the package and hence eliminate the need for signatures? How would drones accept payment on delivery if they were used without a human staff?
It's a good thing that drones are now available in Nigeria but I do hope that Yudala actually starts using it as a delivery system rather than just doing a test run.
A few months ago, I learnt that Amazon.com was planning to start using drones for delivering to her numerous US customers and they've already started testing them but it has not being fully integrated yet. Now that Nigerian companies like Yudala are also trying it out, I have to say "keep it up".
