Netflix is a cool pay tv service that in now available in Nigeria and it's one service I would recommend if you are tired of the other pay tv service providers and just want to try something new. I have to say that I've not seen any other pay tv service that offers the number of movies or tv series that Netflix has to offer and one advantage they have over others is that they allow you to watch it whenever you want without having to wait for a time schedule for it to be aired. You play movies on demand when you want and for how long you want it while being able to continue from where you last stopped.
One thing I've come to know about Netflix's service in Nigeria is that it can become a bit more expensive than many other local pay tv service providers and this is mostly as a result of the cost of internet service to subscribers.
While a month's subscription to Netflix costs as little as about N4300($11.99)for the Ultra HD premium plan which you can watch on HD tv, it costs as much as N1500 to watch a 1 hr movie on Netflix if a subscriber is on a data plan. A 1GB data plan costs about N1000 to N1500 in Nigeria and watching a 3 hr movie can cost as much as N3000 which is considered to high considering the fact that it costs about that same amount to get a basic cable tv subscription service from companies like DSTV or Startimes.
Things you can do so save money with Netflix in Nigeria"
1. Go for an unlimited data plan:
If you are going to e watching Netflix for longer hours, it would make better economic sense if you just subscribed to an unlimited data plan that doesn't charge you any extra fees irrespective of how many videos you have downloaded or watched. With a data plan, you are likely to pay more than with an unlimited data plan. You can get an unlimited data plan in Nigeria for about N20,000 per month. This is the best option I've seen for Nigerians but if you would rather not pay for an unlimited plan because of its cost, you can still follow other options to save your data cost.
2. Watch Netflix on smaller devices like your tablet or phone:
Watching Netflix videos on a bigger screen like your TV would use more data if you are using a pay as you go data plan but if you want to save money on that plan, you can make the screen smaller and watch SD version videos on your tablet or phone. It may not be as exciting as with a HD screen but it would use less data.
3. Don't watch all the time:
If you would rather stick to a pay as you go data plan, you can still reduce your internet data costs by not getting too addicted to Netflix and watch it all the time.
4. Don't watch everything:
Sure, there are many videos on Netflix and I'm guessing over 4000 titles but the truth is that you don't have to love all the movies. Different people tend to have different movies they would like. You can watch a preview of videos to see which suits your taste and only watch the ones you'd really like. Personally, for me I like watching action, Sci-fi and Superhero videos. You don't have to watch all the titles Netflix has but just try and stick to videos that best suits you.
5. Share costs with your household:
With Netflix, you can also allow many people to use the same account and watch Netflix on their various devices. You can watch on the same device at different times or watch on up to 4 devices at the same time and even share the same internet service if you are close to each other. You can have them share the cost with you by contributing to the internet data costs and subscription on a daily basis using the same account.
