Yes, you can actually make money online in Nigeria by selling ads or rather ad spaces. How do you do this? Well it basically involves creating spaces for adverts and letting people know that it is for sale.
I have blogged a lot about many ways of making money online in Nigeria and selling ad spaces is one reliable way to also do this. We know that a lot of website owners in Nigeria who make money from their websites do so with Google adsense. Now you should know that Google makes more of this money by selling the ads directly and paying you a commision for your part. Now imagine if you were to set up your own version of Adwords or perhaps just want to diversify from the adsense programme. Selling ads could make you money online and it could become a valuable way to make money for people in Nigeria in the near future. What if you were selling ads yourself, would it not be more profitable than Google adsense was paying you.
How to sell ads on your website
Suppose you have finally decided to sell ads, how do you do this?
Well you can do this in the following ways:
- Manually
- Automatically
Selling ads Manually
This is basically using the simplest methods of selling ads on your website by placing ad spaces on your site with a price tag and then allowing people to contact you. You then have to manually review and upload the ads directly to your website after confirming their payments. Here you allow potential advertisers create their own ads in the format you prescribe. I have seen a couple of Nigerian blogs doing this. Some also do a kind of advertising by allowing people to pay them for doing website or product reviews on their blog.
Selling ads AutomaticallyThis involves selling ads on your site by allowing people to pay for ad spaces and be able to pay for, create and immediately have their sites showing on your website or blog. Some sites are already thinking outside the box, away from Google adsense and creating advertising systems of their own. An example is
DigitalPoint.
Google adsense also sells ads automatically although regularly has a staff doing manual review of ads in order to remove bad ads which may have slipped through the automatic review system. Google allows people to create ads from within its network, pre-pay for it and have it displaying in a few minutes. DigitalPoint is also doing something like this and one would need to set up scripts that can help you achieve this on your website if you ever decide to sell ads automatically.
Getting paid for selling ads online in NigeriaIf you are interested in making money online this way, apart from setting up the system that allows people to automatically advertise, you would also need to set up a payment system that would only make an advert appear once a successful payment has been made. Payment systems I would suggest that could work for this purpose are Alertpay, Liberty reserve, Interswitch, Etranzact and Fastecash. Most of them send Instant Payment notification to your server in order to allow you create records and grant immediate access to the buyer.
How to sell ads effectivelyIn order to sell ads effectively, you may need to do a lot of things but one particular thing I would suggest is having a content based website with highly searched keywords. There is a lot of traffic going to Google from Nigeria and people here in Africa's largest internet market, are asking Google a lot of questions, most of which the search engine can hardly answer but rather redirect them back to content rich site. It then means that for you to be able to sell ads online effectively in Nigeria, you would need to have a website that ranks high in the specific keyword. For instance, if people are mostly interested in looking for 3g USB modems, you can SEO your website to have a lot of content and rank high for the queries on "3g USB modems", then you create ad spaces that would allow providers of such product be able to advertise on your site. You may as well go the extra mile by meeting with service providers and convince them to advertise on your website since you have the potential of sending them targeted offline traffic which is good for their business. Another example is Nokia phones. A lot of people in Nigeria are looking for a way to buy original and the latest Nokia phones but don't know all the people really selling it. What you can do to sell ads in this category is to SEO your website to rank high in Nokia phones for Nigeria and offer up ad spaces which will eventually be bought by real product sellers. You may even create a system that would allow potential advertisers to outbid each other.
ConclusionThere are many ways to make money online in Nigeria and selling your own ads is definitely one of them.
