Owning a domain name at one registrar gives you the right to transfer to another registrar, sometimes, at a fee. There are many reasons why webmasters may want to transfer from one registrar to another but my reason is because I couldn't use Adsense for Domains at my former registrar.
In order to be able to transfer a domain name from one to another domain registrar, the most important thin you need its the Authorization Code. The Authorization code is is a code consisting of numbers and letters and this should be known only to you. If you really want to keep ownership of your domain name to yourself then make sure that you are the only one that knows the Authorization code. With that code, anybody can transfer or steal your domain even if you still have web hosting services running.
A domain name is one of the most important assets of a website and losing it can be disastrous.
Once you get the code from your former registrar, all you need to do is sign up with your new registrar and transfer the domain from within your account. It may take up to 72 hrs for the domain to be brought into your account and then you can start setting up pointers to your web host to keep your website running
