The Google Doc viewer really is a helpful too for viewing a variety of important documents and you can easily use it to pdf for free. The document viewer can be used to access and display url of supported files your provide and display tem as pdf. You will be able to download and save the file later after viewing it.
If you have for example a Word document uploaded on your server, you can get the url and fill it in the form here http://docs.google.com/viewer?pli=1
Once you have generated the link for your document url, just click on view to go to the page to view it. This will give you a visual display of the referred document in pdf and you can save it by clicking on the FILE -> Print (PDF) option and save it as pdf. A printer dialog box may come up, Select the print option and it will display the pdf file on your browser or download automatically depending on your browser setup. I normally use Google Chrome so it shows in the browser. If you can view the contents of the pdf in the brower, the next thing you should do is to save it to your local folder.
If the dialog box for printing comes up again, just close it cos you don't need to print it.
