MTN Nigeria offers a very easy way for subscribers to back up their contacts. Now imagine what would happen if you lose your phone one way or the other? It could fall out of your pocket unnoticed, permanently misplaced or get stolen> Fine you could buy another phone and use sim swap to retrieve your original number, but how do you recover your phonebook contacts containing numbers of your close friends, business clients and families? Ok, maybe you might have been a bit smart to backup your contacts to a hard drive like on your computer, laptop, ipad or flash drive. Now what happens if those gadgets get crashed> How do you recover those numbers back?

One of the best ways of backing up or storing your phonebook contacts is by making use of a remote server. It allows you to store your contacts list as well as other items on the internet(online).
MTN Nigeria had begun this service for quite sometime and I finally backed up my contacts today and it just showed 100% synchronized signifying that it has been successfully backed up.
Initially MTN used to offer this service at the url www.mtnonline.com/mtnbackup but it has now been moved to the url https://mtnonline.weballynis.gemalto.com/gemaltobackup/default/login.vhtml

How do back up your Contacts using MTN sim

For a start, here is what you will need:
- An MTN sim card and a mobile phone
- Internet access
- Airtime credit of about N100

STEPS TO DOING BACKUP of your contacts:
- Go to https://mtnonline.weballynis.gemalto.com/gemaltobackup/default/login.vhtml and sign up for an account if you have not done so yet
- Confirm the code sent to your phone by entering it on the sign up page
- Log into your account and click on the back up
- Follow the steps and select your phone
- Receive the automatic settings and save it or do the manual settings if that is recommended for your phone
- Make sure that your phone can already browse and if possible subscribe to their N100 10mb plan
- Go to the sync and backup on your phone and synchronize
- If successful, it will tell you synchronization complete else you may have to repeat the process

I was able to backup my contacts today within 1 minute and it was fast.

Reasons why you may need to use MTN backup service
- Sim card does not have the capacity to copy all the contacts
- Phone memory card is unreliable
- External hard drive or usb is unreliable or prone to virus attacks
- You want an easy, reliable and organized way to store your list

Well you can try backing it up on your computer using the phone's software and then storing the backup file as an attachment in your email box
