I would have written about this much earlier but after much delays with the video and image files that got crashed, I've decide to just write about it now and add the video and pics later on.
I mentioned MTN Hynet as one of the unlimited internet service plans we have in Nigeria because it allows the subscriber to keep downloading and downloading till "you tire". There are no data limits for uploads and downloads. The only limits are the browsing speed and your time of browsing which could be business time, off peak, weekend and so on. Personally I went for the business time but with the average browsing speed as it came with a promo they were doing to get the modem free.
Cost of MTN Hynet To be specific, I was told the modem costs about NGN 10,000 while the lowest internet plan came at about NGN 3,500. So there was a plan that came at about N11,750(512Kbps) with a free modem for business time (7am to 7pm) and I got that one.
Besides, I was not too excited about using MTN's internet service as I have had a not too cool experience with their mobile browsing plans which were not as reliable as Hynet currently is.
The modem has a fixed cost and then there are varying broadband costs depending on the plan you want. There are plans costing as much as N63,000 too. If you are running a business or making money with the internet such as cafe business, you might as well go for hynet because you pay a flat fee for a time based service that is fast. You only pay for time and speed and not on downloads.
How to get connectedNormally, it would be setup and tested at the customer service before being handed over to you. You could also go with your laptop to test it before taking the package home. All you need to get connected to MTN's Hynet service in terms of hardware are:
Hardware:
- A computer with wireless or LAN connectivity
- The username and password for wireless connection (wifi)
- The CPE(MTN Hynet Modem)
Others:
- No software installation
- Subscription to a Hynet plan
Steps to connect to the MTN Hynet serviceIf you want to use wireless connection(wifi)
- Plug in your CPE(modem) to a power source
- Allow the signal bars power up
- Switch on your computer and allow it to scan for wireless connections
- Make sure that wifi is turned on too
- Enter the password give to you when prompted
- Now you are connected
If using LAN/Ethernet connection
- Plug in the Lan cable into the ethernet port
- Power up your computer and modem
- Allow it to search for network cables
- It automatically connects
How fast is MTN Hynet?Well, really fast. Probably faster than Fastlink or mobile browsing. One site I normally use to see if some service is really fast or broadband is by going to Youtube. With MTN Hynet, you can very well make use of internet tv - as in a TV that streams live videos from the internet. With MTN Hynet, you can watch hundreds of Youtube videos almost without buffering and you can learn a lot of things much faster on the internet without having a backache on your system. Now think of a job or activity you normally do using a dial up or poor service cybercafe for 1 hr, with MTN Hynet, you can do it in 15 minutes. I'm not just talking about Yahoo mail, Facebook and others, you could do that in less than 5 mins. So you may as well get a speedometer to check your broadband speed but what I can say is that MTN Hynet is so FAST!
Some problems with the Hynet service
Well it is probably the fastest internet service MTN Nigeria has to offer for now but I just want to mention some hiccups:
- No battery. The modem(CPE) switches off immediately there is now power so you may need to connect it to a batter
- Not so mobile/portable: You can't easily carry it about with your laptop as you would do with usb modems. It is designed for fixed use. The wifi makes it a bit mobile but you have to be within a range of about 10 meters to use that wireless connection
- Non static ip: It doesn't allow one to stay logged in to some sites that disallows users from logging in with dynamic ips
ConclusionOn the whole, this service is great and ideal for those who really want effective broadband internet service in Nigeria. I just hope that MTN would keep on making it reliable, no matter how many customers they eventually get because it seems like internet service providers in Nigeria tend to offer slower service as their customer list grows.
