Although, I have already written a post on this issue before
here, I just thought I should give in a bit of more details of how the process really works at the bank.
Before we get started, here are the things you will need before getting paid by western union at the bank
Things you will need:
- The MTCN - Money Transfer Control Number (10 digits)
- A bank account with the bank or reference from someone with one
- The sender's name and country
- Amount expected
- Test question and answer
- Valid form of identification
So, if you have all those things and have probably confirmed that the money is available for collection at the western union website(nigeria.westernunion.com), then you can go ahead to the bank and request for payment.
Steps to collect western union payment at the bank
- Go to the bank where you have an account
- Meet the person in charge of western union payments
- Ask for a western union form and fill it
- Put in only the first 6 digits of the MTCN and keep the remaining 4 to yourself.
- When asked to, secretly press in the remaining 4 digits on the button given to you and press enter. Look at the small screen
- If successful, it displays, transaction paid and the money will be paid to you by the person
- If not successful, it would display transaction not found.
Now you have collected your foreign currency from western union. You may give the sender a call or send an email thanking him for the transfer. Nowadays, western union is becoming a popular option to send money to many African countries, most especially Nigeria as it is fast, reliable and easy to use. It is not just for friends and families, even business partners can use it to send money across the world.

I had a bad experience with UBA when someone sent me money. I went to the bank and the lady there told me that they didn't have any currency and this was in the morning. I just had to go to another bank closeby where I also had an account ie Intercontinental bank and they paid me quickly. Some of these old generation banks tend to frustrate someone when you are collecting money. I guess they want me to settle before attending to me or something
