I don't really get why these laptop batteries actually find their way into Nigeria. It amounts to nothing more than systematic dumping of toxic wastes on our soil disguised as useful products
My Experience at the so-called computer villageYou should know that there are lot of substandard batteries at this market and it would be hard to find an original and this cuts across various products like laptops, UPS and others.
So, I went to the Computer village Ikeja to get a new Toshiba Laptop battery and I actually went with the specifications meant for my system. Unfortunately they didn't have the exact model I needed but they presented me with another one tht could do the same job - It was made in China and supposedly brand new.
I don't really get what they mean by brand new but as I was about to test the battery on my laptop which I took to the village, it only powered for a few minutes but I was told that's how it was packaged and that I would have to fully charge it before usage.
Ok, I went home with it since my initial laptop battery was already totally exchausted and couldn't even power up my laptop on its own. I went home, replaced it with the so called new one from the Computer village and charged it for over 6 hrs. I later powered on my laptop and was happy that it worked. Later, Nepa took the light and I was now working on battery alone.
Alas, my China made laptop battery could not last for up to 15 minutes and it was packaged as brand new - Only that it was not tight sealed.
I've had the same experience with buying UPS replacement batteries only to find out that it can't even carry my computer for up to 10 mins.
My ResolveIf I must buy a new battery next time, I would not be in a hurry as I would test it for up to 30 mins standalone time before buying.
If I must buy a new battery next time, I would make sure that it is the one specified for my laptop. It must be an American or original Chinese version
Perhaps I would also look into other buying options such as onine shopping and shipping directly from the USA.
They say whatever is worth doing at all is worth doing well so there is no reason to keep patronizing a substandard industry that would only end up increasing toxic wastes in Nigeria. Better to buy one battery that would last for 2 years than buy a fake one that would ony last 1 month.
I also hope that the Nigerian Custom service would look into the importation or production of fake batteries into and within the country.
