Famous Nigerian writer Chinua Achebe already has another book that is set to be released soon(October 11, 2012) and it is titled - There was a country.

There has been a couple of authors writing books related to the Biafra - Nigeria civil war but I bet none would be as classy as that of Prof. Chinua's. There is hardly any educated Nigerian now who has not heard about him or read some of his works which include the popular "Things fall apart". Achebe has a way of writing that is simple and yet attracts a lot of readers. He is able to connect and identity with his audience in a real way as most of his works are more of real or personal life experiences which were also influenced by the Nigerian culture. A true son of the soil and I know he did justice to this book.

If you yearn to read a comprehensive report about what happened during the Biafran war, albeit from Chinua's personal angle, this latest book by Achebe should be among your first.

If I was asked to tell about what happened during that civil war, I would say that there was a perceived plan to belittle southern Nigeria and that probably caused the first coup. What happened later on was a counter coup and genocide that later led to the killing of a lot of Igbo people who were the major southern tribe living in northern Nigeria then. Ndigbo then had a right to defend themselves, the mantle fell on Ojukwu and this later led to a prolonged civil war. The scars of the war still remain and it seems we are not yet correcting the mistakes of the past.

If we must prevent any future wars, we really need to start caring about the feelings of others if we are to remain as one Nigeria.

Well those are just my thoughts. Want to know what Achebe has to say about Biafra? Then check out his book called "There was a country".
