Jonathan Goodluck in his speech on Democracy day - May 29, announced the renaming of the Federal University UNILAG to Moshood Abiola University. This he did in honour of the late political legend MKO who was the most popular candidate and won the presidential election in but did not become president due to a military injunction.

Now Jonathan did something that didn't go down well with both the students and graduates of the famous UNILAG. Although MKO Abiola was a man most people, including Unilag students host in high esteem, they tend to value Unilag more than they value Abiola. Perhaps it seems Jonathan made this decision as a way of saying thanks to the South West for voting for him at the last presidential election but really, it is an unpopular move and this may cause him to lose votes for the next presidential election and even affect the PDP's chances of capturing the South West where most Unilag graduates reside in.

Unilag may be just a 4 walled institution but what makes her great are not just the classrooms, offices, magnificient buildings and serene environment, but it is the great minds and people she has helped to groom and grow.

I'm guessing when Jonathan consults again with the right people, he may reverse the decision because it seems he just made a rash decision and perhaps with the wrong people before renaming Unilag.

I think most people who graduates from Unilag would not want to be telling people that they graduated from MAU, I mean UNILAG is a brand that has been existing for over 50 years so why change to MAU now?

Renaming a Federal University like Unilag to MAU is a sure way to lose votes from the learned voting public. PDP and Jonathan need to rethink this decision in the interest of the public. They could have renamed the national stadium Surulere after Abiola.
