Niche Blogging: The next level to make money in Nigeria

Although there are a couple of niche blogs in Nigeria already but there still is a lot of space for competition. What we currently do have most are general bloggers - Bloggers who blog about everything and not really anything specifically. Some even blog about their daily thoughts and experiences, however when it comes to professional blogging in Nigeria, I mean really making money from blogging, at the rate at which blogs and internet publishing is growing, the next logical step would be to go niche blogging.

What does Niche blogging mean? It simply refers to blogging about a specific category of things or a specific theme and it's called a niche. For instance, when a blogger starts a blog to write about family planning, then that is his niche. When he also start a blog about tablet pcs or Kindle Fire, then that also is his niche and such blogs are more likely to get more ranking and hence traffic from search engines than if their blog was just a general one.

I've had some successes with out of the blue niche blogs which I really didn't plan and I also just started a niche blog some 6 months ago and it's already paying off. It shows that niche blogs are a powerful tool to even rank number one on search engines like Google if the domain name and web content is right.

Think of it this way, If someone wanted to dominate a query like eateries Nigeria and registers a domain like eateriesnigeria.com and starts publishing reviews about eateries around Nigeria with his experiences on visiting them. Chances are that he would soon dominate that niche and have an influx of advertisers related to that sector. If you build it, they will come.

Does Google like niche blogs?
Although there is news about Google panda update on how Google is penalizing niche blogs with little or no content, I guess you can always beat that by adding more content to your blog to improve your rank on Google and make your site become an authority site.

How do I dominate with a niche blog?
First of all, what I normally try to do is find the strength of that niche and if there were any close competition, I try to see if it a niche site and how many pages of content it already has indexed. Then I try to write about 100 articles on my niche and see how it will do for 2 weeks. If successful, then I continue to dominate.

Targeting visitors
If you plan to work on a niche blog, then one thing you need to consider are who your potential visitors are and if they are willing to buy. For instance, if your niche site is promoting products on Amazon.com, it would do much better if your target audience are in the USA, Canada or UK.
