I visited the Youtube partner program site today to see the requirements for becoming a partner but to my surprise, Nigeria was not listed among them. This is funny because Nigeria has the highest number of internet users in Africa according to Google even and probably one of the highest investors in their Adwords program from Africa but there is no listing for Nigeria as a country on the Youtube partner site. Funny enough, there are only 2 countries in Africa which are currently accepted in the program and they are: Kenya and South Africa.
According to many blogs, there are fake stories that the YouTube partner program is now open to everyone but this is actually a big lie. It is only open to a few select countries on the world of which Nigeria and a whole lot of other African nations are excluded.
Nigeria also is the powerhouse of Africa when it comes to movie production as there are a lot of small time movie producers and there are a lot of home grown movies, suitable for Youtube which may not have made their way to the world stage but can add useful content on Youtube.
I still wonder why Nigeria is not included in the Youtube partner program or did someone buy the right to prevent Nigerians from publishing their Youtube videos for profit.
What surprises me even more is the fact that I noticed today that some Google ads were showing on my Youtube videos but I wasn't paid for it. I would have been glad if at least Youtube gives me a bit of royalty for posting ads on my original videos even if I would have to give back a bit to them hosting it for offering free hosting.
YouTube should open up the partner program to Nigeria too if they really want to motivate talented Nigerians to add more content to their network.
