As a blogger, one of the things that can help improve your website's ranking is the comments you get on a blog post. Although bloggers are still divided on the extent of freedom that should be given to a blog commentator when you make a blog post and while some have decided to slow down comments by adding security feautures, others actually allow most or all comments. However, you should know that comments are more likely to be more if you make it easier for people to comment on your blog.
Personally, when I started blogging, I decided to allow all comments cine my website was not really getting much traffic then but as traffic increased and there were a lot of comments and some were spam messages, I decided to slow it down by introducing a verification feature - That has somehow slowed down the number of comments I get on a blog post but it has somehow reached an acceptable level I can live with.
Should you allow all comments or sift through everyone to remove the bad or unwanted eggs? Well it's your choice really.
Now as for the issue of how blog comments can improve your website traffic, it's true and it can. Comments add more content to your website and the more you have, the higher search engines will rank you. When search engines rank you higher, it kicks back more traffic to your website and this ultimately improves your alexa ranking and more traffic. So the more comments you have on a blog post, the more your website traffic in the long term - So how much freedom can you allow to your audience?
There are small blogs and there are big blogs, there are bloggers who just know how to write to pull in comments so it really depends on how your blog post captures the interest of your targeted audience.
2 Things that can help you get more comments on a blog post- Attractive writing style
- Easy commenting system
The two factors are useful together as having a good blog post may not be sufficient enough to attract a comment from a visitor. Your blog post may attract a visitor but may not draw a comment if they find it hard to leave one. So your writing style and topic should interest them and they should find it easy to leave a comment.
Some reasons why people would be more likely to leave a comment- If they love the way your write
- If your blog post interests them.
- If it gets listed on top of search results
- If they are subscribed to your blog
- If they think the same way you do
- If they understand your language
- If they are already connected to you
So what would you rather have your blog be like? I've seen several blogs where the writers do excellent posting and are very detailed but they do have very little comments and I've also seen blogs with 50 to 100 words in a blog post and yet it attracts over 400 to 1000 comments! Now tell me which one would be ranked higher on search results or Alexa? Definitely the one with more comments since it has more content and has attracted a lot of people.
