There is probably a lot of confusion between Internet Marketing and Affiliate Marketing and I agree they mean different things although the main focus is marketing. I think the simple difference is that Internet marketing is to promote something on the internet while Affiliate marketing involved with promoting a product.
So, with the way I see it, internet marketing may not exactly have to deal with marketing a product or service, it may also have to do with promoting an image of a person or company without necessary selling something or promoting sales. With Affiliate marketing however, the focus is to promote sales or conversions since that's the only way an AM is gonna get paid.
Affiliate market is product or service related and the basis of reward for an affiliate is based on sales while for an internet marketer, the job is to create awareness or make something popular on the internet, whether they are sales or not.
However, it seems the jobs of both Internet Marketers and Affiliate marketers tend to mix at times since both may probably use the same campaign tools to promote an item on the internet. The obvious thing is that they both do marketing
When it comes to the issue of payment or commission to the marketer, for the Affiliate, his payment or credit is normally based on sales while for an internet marketer, his reward is mostly based on traffic and not necessarily sales. The internet marketer tends to enjoy a flexible form of commission than an Affiliate as he may simply charge a flat fee while an affiliate cannot. A good example of an internet marketing program is Google adwords - They charge you for clicks and impressions if they give you traffic. Affiliates on the other hand tend to get underpaid despite their efforts in bringing traffic since they only get credited when sales are made.
