At times it pays to diversify your online assets. One of the things about building niche sites is that it exposes you to more opportunities you initially didn;t have access to.
When I started my first website which was a general informational website, my main focus was to earn income from affiliate programs and online advertising. Well, I was earning income from it but not as I would have expected. It was a general purpose website and it wasn;t until I went into niche websites that I saw the great potential. The first niche website I launched had only about 15 web pages of static content while my first website already had over 500 pages of Google indexed pages. Yet I earned more income from my niche site than I earned from my first general purpose website.
At times, it pays to really diversify and go into niche blogging or websites. Building a single general purposr blog is good but having other niche blogs or websites is even better. Not all niche websites give a good payback but it produces much better results than if you just went for all niches with a single website.
It's really all about keywords and the websites that have abundant content relating to it. Some keywords or niches are more popular than others and that's why niche blogging is a growing and rewarding profession in a wordl where there are already a large number of websites.
Search engines rank niche websites much higher than general websites and this is based on keywords whic hare searched through them. You wouldn't expect a search engine like Google or Bing to refer you to a general website on a keyword like Nokia N90 when there is a niche website that already talks a lot about that specific Nokia phone. Most general websites don't have sufficient relevant content on particular keywords as they remain general.
So it's really about content and keywords and the more of a content related keyword is available on a website, the more traffic it gets from search engines when related queries are made.
So you could imagine my frustration after spending about 2 years building a general purpose site with 500 pages and got little reward for it while another website I built based on a niche blessed me even more within 6 months and with just 15 pages.
The thing about our world wide web is that there are now many websites all talking about several things but I guess search engines are getting smarter by directing most of their visitors to websites which have the most relevant type of content they are searching for.
What about Google Panda vs Niche websites? Although there is a lot of talk about the Google update targeted at niche sites, I think it would not affect all of such sites except perhaps the ones with little or no content. I think a niche site which has a lot of useful and unique content would always be in their good books.
