From Google Nigeria to Google Naija

I can't believe that Google Nigeria has since been renamed to Google Naija. What?!!
That almost amounts to renaming Nigeria to Naija and I wonder what the govt is doing about it most especially as we recall Dora Akunyili at one time calling on all companies to stop referring to Nigeria as Naija, even in their adverts.

It is a bit surprising and questionable too for a country's Google custom domain to be renamed to a nick name which is not an official name. Do Nigerians, perhaps, identify more on the web with the name Naija than Nigeria.

From an S.E.O. point of view, the word Naija it not as higly searched as Nigeria nor is the phrase Google Naija as high as Google Nigeria. Besides, it's even hard to type the word naija using prediction mode than typing the word Nigeria so I'm wondering the criteria for this choice.

Ordinarily, most people know that the word Naija is just a pidgin English name or short name for Nigeria. But does that imply that Naija is now a more favourable name than Nigeria?

Initially when Google started it's custom domain for Nigeria at google.com.ng, it was just called Google Nigeria but now it now bears a new, albeit more popular local name - Google Naija.

I've been to a couple of other country Google domains and seen that they still bear the official and not nick name for their respective countries

Google Ghana - google.com.gh
Google South Africa - google.co.za
Google Kenya - google.co.ke

Naija is not an official name for Nigeria. In normal cases, the government could actually sue Google for referring to her as Naija on the web when our official name is still Nigeria

Secondly, however, it's true that pidgin English is a more widely spoken language in Nigeria even more the normal English.

So, while I don't see anything wrong with Google providing search results and translations in pidgin English, it seems a bit odd to rename Google Nigeria to Google Naija. Maybe some geeks did that without the blessing of Nigeria's govt. Besides, the word Naija is not yet listed on most mobile phone dictionaries like mine unlike Nigeria which one can easily type using prediction mode.
