Ogbongeblog is a top tech blog in Nigeria that has a lot of useful content and also has a lot of visitors across the world.
Ogbongeblog also has a good alexa ranking of under 40k worldwide and under 170 in Nigeria.
I recently noticed that the desktop version for the website is no longer working except for the mobile version which is supported by Mobstac for blogger sites. Many visitors to the desktop version of the site would normally get a 404 error and this is nor something search engines like Google would continue to support.
I had been wondering what caused it and after doing some research, I found out that it was probably from blogger who sort of blocked the website's desktop url.
I also noticed that Jide had made a formal complaint to Google on the issue which was regarded as a Blogger automated classification system. I'm not sure what that means but it is already having negative effect on his blog.
Ogbongeblog runs on a free web hosting by Blogger but uses a custom domain name at ogbongeblog.com and the main author is Jide Ogunsanya.
The top Nigerian blog does have a lot of visitors who are mostly mobile but also a considerable amount of desktop users.
While I'm not sure what the exact problem is but It seems that this scenario will cause a lot of damage to the blog if not corrected sooner.
I guess that's one of the hazards of hosting on a free blog like blogger. One's blog could be shut down anyday and without a guarantee of restoration.
How Ogbongeblog will be affected
===========================
- Loss in search engine traffic: Since most old links will no longer be working
- Loss in Google indexing: Google has already delisted a lot of urls beginning with www.
- Loss in Adsense earnings: There would probably be a drop in Ogbongeglog's adsense desktop earning which earn more than mobile adsense formats.
What I'd recommend: I would advise Jide to simply move his blog from blogger to a paid wordpress hosting and use a proper redirect function to change old urls in Google's index.
