Sponsored posts or reviews are a cool way to make money from a blog or content publishing website. This is because this source of income is directly under your control and so no need to be worrying about the availability or non-availability of online advertisers. With Sponsored posts, a website owner can actually make some cool money while he keeps on doing what he loves doing.
I recently received an offer to make a Sponsored blog post and in that offer, there was also a consideration of $40 which was meant to serve as my service fee for publishing that post. Although I rejected the offer due to the fact that I didn't want to include dofollow links in my blog but that made me to start thinking about how to revive my Sponsored post advertising service and review the rates too.
One question everyone who might want to start offering a sponsored reviews service would want to have answered is "How much to charge for Sponsored posts?".
I think the rate one should charge should be based on the value of that website and how the advertiser base is. If the website is a very popular one, the owner could charge more and if it was not so popular, then it should be a smaller rate.
I've read many reviews by bloggers on the issue and even some proposed mathematical calculations to arrive at the answer. For some, it has to be related to traffic such as page views, unique visitors as well as the geographical region for the blog. For others, it basically boils down to how much the site owner wants to charge and nothing less.
I've seen cases were even local bloggers in Nigeria charge as much as $200 and as little as $10 and so I think it basically boils down to what the blogger or publisher wants to charge. Yes. it's your preference and no one can hold you to ransom.
For the sake of attracting more advertisers however, it's smarter to charge a reasonable rate for the service rather than placing your fees on the high side which may not be good for many small businesses.
I think, just to be on the safe side, one could start wit ha low rate and then move up as he/she gets more advertisers seeking for the service. I mean, if one starts with say $10 per review and he does about 1 review a day, that's probably ok but if there are more requests for reviews per day, he may choose to charge higher just to make the job easier for him while also making more money. This is the law of demand.
Another issue is on that related to using dofollow links. It is one of the reasons why I rejected an offer for a sponsored post. Dofollow links are links that gives off your page ranking power to another website. It says to search engines that you vouch for that site and since it's a tough world out here for people concerned about SEO, I'm not too keen about selling links that are actually dofollow. I think it's better to offer Sponsored reviews that only carry nofollow links. This would help give you an edge over the websites trying to buy off your keywords ranking for chicken change.
