For a long time, the normal way to receive a payment from Google Adsense in Nigeria has always been through a foreign issued cheque which is normally deposited and cleared by means of a domiciliary bank account. The cheque normally takes at least 21 working days to be cleared and cashed in the Nigerian publisher's account.

For a long time, Nigerian Adsense publishers had been worried and hoping that Google would offer alternative forms of payment such as Western union and Bank wires apart from just issuing foreign cheques. A couple of years ago, some other African countries like Kenya and Ghana were already enjoying instant payments from Adsense unlike Nigeria which seemed to have the most successful publishers.

Most of the payments Google has been making to adsense publishers in Africa were mostly issued by Google Ireland which was a part of Google USA's company and they have been mostly issuing cheques which tend to take a lot of time to clear in African banks.

Lately, however, it seems the time is ripe for Nigerian publishers who had for a long time hoped that Google would smile at them and offer faster payments. Western union payments are cool for any publisher but it seems direct bank wires are even better for many Nigerian publishers who already have foreign currency domiciliary accounts.

Already, Google has started sending emails to publishers in Nigeria informing them of the recent improvement
in their payment options. According to Google, the bank wire option will offer Nigerian publishers an opportunity to switch to bank wire payments or still accept foreign cheques which will no longer be sent by DHL. This would make adsense payments much faster. I think the bank wire option is better for most people since it would remove the 21 days wait for clearing an adsense cheque in Nigeria.

When is it expected to take effect? According to Google, it would start from the next month and that's in April and I would say it's a befitting Easter gift.

Does it mean that foreign cheques will no longer be issued? Well, they would still be issued but they would no longer be sent via express delivery courier services like DHL. So, if you can wait for a post from NIPOST, you may still stick to keep receiving their foreign cheques. It may have to be sent by snail mail and If you ask me, I'd say that Nigerians should avoid getting paid by a snail mail cheque. I once lost a $400 cheque from Chitika using that method.

Nigerian Adsense publishers have now being encouraged to adopt the bank wire option since this is a faster and mor reliable way to get paid. All a publisher would have to do is to first get the bank wire transfer details from his bank and then use it to update his payment settings in his Google Adsense account.

Also, Google seems likely to stop Euro reporting for Adsense publishers in Nigeria as they would now be no need for making any conversions in Euro as Adsense reporting will now be made available in US dollars. Personally, I didn't really see any reason why Adsense used Euro reporting for Nigerians in the first place since we don't live in Europe and for a foreign currency, the US dollar is preferable to most Nigerians.

Will there be any fees for receiving money through Bank wires from Google?
Well, according to Google Ireland, there would no longer be any fees for them sending payment to publishers in Nigeria using the new bank wire option but publishers may receive less that the original amount sent depending on bank charges for receiving money at the bank. So, people are urged to check with their bank to know the standard fees for receiving foreign bank wires into their bank in Nigeria.

I think this is cool given that there is normally a €17 courier fee deducted from one's Google adsense earnings before the cheque is finally sent using an express courier service.

With the new international bank wire payment option made available for Adsense publishers in Nigeria, there would no longer be any courier fee or bank wire fees from Google's side but the banks may charge a fee for receiving money into one's account. It is a much faster and more reliable means of getting paid from Adsense.

I think it is an encouraging move from Google to encourage existing publishers to remain loyal, encourage new publishers to join the network and in this way also encourage advertisers to patronize Adwords which is Google's advertising portal.

Google Adsense already has major competitors in Nigeria who offer a much faster payment to publishers. AdDynamo offers direct bank payments in Naira while Media.net offers direct wire transfers.

With this new payment system from Google, I think Adsense will remain for a long time, the major way through which many bloggers would keep making money online in Nigeria.
