When it comes to one of my favourite internet service providers in the past, it used to be Starcomms. What I loved about their CDMA service was just because they offered an unlimited download service for a flat monthly fee of about N7,000. I had to dump them after using them for many months without getting any connection. Imagine paying for a full month's service in advance only to get connected to the internet for about 20% of the month.
There is no reason why someone would keep subscribing to an internet service without being able to connect to the internet and this is even after paying an advance fee of N7k for the month. It is like an advance fee scam or 419 as most Nigerians know it. Why keep paying for a service without receiving it? I had to stop subscribing and thank God I found a better and faster internet service even though it came with limited data downloads.
I received calls and emails from Starcomms asking why I stopped subscribing and I told them my mind and also told them that they needed to compensate me even if they wanted me to subscribe to another plan. I had lost more than 3 months of subscription due to their inefficient internet service.
In terms of speed, Starcomms was averagely good but not fast enough. It was ok for a dial up plan and I had an ok connection when using it in Surulere Lagos. However, after several months of poor service for most of the time, I had to stop using it since it amounted to a waste of money. Some people say that they are still working but after the bad experience, I don't plan on going back anytime soon.
Luckily, as I was experiencing pretty slow speed and inefficient poor service from Starcomms, MTN's fast internet service called HYnet came into the picture. MTN Hynet was a really fast internet service that works with a fixed CPE modem and it delivered speeds of up to 2MBps. What really made me shift away from Starcomms then was because MTN Hynet was fast and yet also offered unlimited data downloads. However, lately, I've been thinking of trying out Starcomms since MTN Hynet internet plans has increased and to get unlimited downloads now, one has to pay at least N35k per month. I now go for their data bundles that cost at least N4k per month which is still ok and faster.
I would be willing to go back to start using Starcomms but it can be hard going back when MTN Hynet is so fast and there is no public statement by Starcomms that they have improved or doing something new. I'm not sure where I kept my Starcomms modem but I would be willing to give them a try again when they get their acts together and I'm convinced they've improved their services.
