DSTV Nigeria is currently doing a decoder swap program in which they are offering to change your old decoders for their new decoders. Why they are doing it? I'm not totally sure but they say it's because of an upgrade to their decoder technologies since the older legacy decoders are not secure enough and would not be able to receive services using their new technology. I was wondering why they don't simply upgrade the software in their decoders rather than having us give away our old decoders. Afterall, older computers and laptops can always be upgraded with the latest Windows or Linus software so it should be the same with Decoders. Anyway, it seems that the older decoders might not have been able to survive a software upgrade and so they might need to be totally changed. Perhaps, the new DSTV platform requires a different hardware rather than just a new software.
DSTV Nigeria is offering to swap your old decoder for free so that you might be able to fully enjoy the subscription you paid for. Personally for me, the problem I had with my old Dual view PVR decoder was that it could no longer do recording and rewind and I'm hoping that the new one would solve that.
Does your decoder qualify for a free swap? Well, the models that qualify are the following: DSD 910’s, DSD 920’s, DSD 933, DSD 990’s and MC DSD (Single view, 660, 720 & 720i), Dual view 820, SDPVR 3001. I'm happy that mine qualifies but I'm surprised that their new decoder is actually smaller than my old one and I feel a bit cheated. Mine was an SDPVR 3001 decoder and I have to swap this for a smaller HD compliant decoder.
In order to enjoy the free decoder swap promo, you will also need to have been an active subscriber as from August 1st 2014 to September 15th 2014.
Deadline for Swapping your old decoders? You have to do this before November 30th 2014 according to a publication by DSTV Nigeria if yours is a single or Dual view decoder while it is 28th February 2015 for SDPVR 3001 decoders.
All you need to do is take your old decoder to a closeby Multichoice office in Nigeria and request for the new one. There are no fees that you have to pay.
