When it comes to online shopping in Nigeria, Konga is a big giant in the field. Their yearly Yakata sales event is normally a period during which they offer a lot of useful items at a really low price for early Christmas and year end shoppers. The prices are normally discounted in order to encourage more people to buy during the period which mimics the black Friday shopping event that's common in the USA. Yakata is Konga's Nigerian version of Black Friday sales that happens in the U.S.
Konga's Yakata comes at a time when many Nigerians are looking for things to buy for Christmas and the event normally attracts a lot of people to Konga's website in order to benefit from the hugely discounted products that are on sale on the shopping website and many normally place orders to have this items delivered to them.
November 2014 was not the first time Konga was doing their Yakata sales event and I could recall that they also did it in 2013 but then it was not so successful since their website went offline a a result of the huge traffic. Prior to the event in 2014, they had reported they've upgraded their website and that it was ready to accept as many orders as possible without having to go offline again and this was true. Unlike some other shopping websites in Nigeria which were also offering black Friday deals, Konga's website remained offline and Nigerians loved it and kept shopping on Friday.
As a result of the fact that their website was able to handle as many orders as possible during their black Friday deals, they've reportedly made a lot of sales in that single day. Reports have it that they made more sales during their Yakata than they made in the whole of 2014 - Imagine that!
Their website had a zero down time meaning that it never went offline despite the visitor traffic which was five times the normal daily traffic.
Konga reportedly made over 600 million Naira($3.5m) on that single day and the most purchased products were mostly electronics and they include the Spark Android tablet, Infinix Zero and the 32 inch Polystar TV.
They delivered about 1420 orders on that same day and I guess the fact that they've added more delivery vehicles to their fleet helped them achieve this.
One thing to also note was that as a result of the fact that Konga's website was fully optimized for mobile devices, they actually received more orders from mobile devices(53%) than from web users(47%). It shows the growing power of mobile users in Nigeria and why online merchants should make their websites mobile friendly.
The next Konga' Yakata sales event will come up in 2015 during Black Friday but you don't have to wait for that day before saving money and buying thing from Konga. This is because shopping on Konga, even on a normal day actually saves you money as a Nigerian.
